How to prepare for a WSOP Main Event
There are more and more gambling enthusiasts who try their luck in online casinos for reasons that appear rather evident: the approach is rather easy and it is enough to have an internet connection and a computer or smartphone to start play, even if you are comfortably at home.

The most exciting and long-awaited poker event of the year is already back! Whether you qualified online to compete in the WSOP or chose to get there on your own by drawing from your bankroll, one thing is certain, you must wait impatiently for this moment. To put the odds on your side and have a good stay, here are some tips that may prove useful. Many would recomend to use the online poker sites instead on real live tournaments but its a totl different story. The experience alone is fantastic. For those who still love the online thing we also recomend this Guide to select the best poker sites online.
Be professional in the management of your tournament programIf you are planning to spend a long stay in Las Vegas, this will likely be one of the keys to your success. Playing it can be like a real marathon. The days are long, the tournaments are linked, especially if you compete in a lot of events at $ 1,000 or $ 1,500 the entry where the structure is relatively fast. You can spend a lot of hours at the tables by chaining the poor performances if the variance is not on your side. Suffice to say that after several consecutive tournaments without ITM and the fatigue that accumulates, you can quickly get bored and demotivated for the rest.
It is therefore important to plan a few days of recovery in your program to avoid the famous "burn-out" at the end of your stay. Try to make your program in advance, and don't forget to consult the list of tournaments scheduled on the sidelines of the WSOP, often advantageous (entry fee and participants weaker).
Choose your place wiselyTake a room in a hotel or share a villa with friends? Both options have their pros and cons. The second may seem the coolest but don't forget the annoyances that can go with it:
- Friends partying in the villa until noon when you need to sleep the night before a tournament.
- The need to have a car for each trip (you will find it very difficult to find a taxi outside the Strip)
- The distance from your villa to the Rio or to the different casinos if you plan to play cash game regularly.
- Probably no gym available.
You understand, I advise you to choose the hotel, unless you know very well the friends with whom you are going to spend the stay, just to be sure to avoid headaches and unpleasant surprises.
Choosing your hotel depends on your budget, of course, but Las Vegas establishments generally offer good value for money. Here are some criteria to help you make your choice:
The proximity to the Rio and the cash game tables. In my opinion, the best tables are at Aria and Bellagio, which is why I have chosen to stay at Vdara for the past two years, access to the Rio being also fast. Some hotels offer a "poker rate", ie a reduction on their rates provided they play a certain hourly volume in cash game (Aria, Wynn, etc.). And others also offer a "long-term rate" if you plan to spend at least one month there.
The hotel services: swimming pool (s), gym, spa, but also the variety of restaurants available on site ... All these details are important for a long stay. You will see that you will be happy not to have to move around the Strip every time you look for a good restaurant for example.
Play sports and eat healthyI talked about it at length in several of my previous blogs but obviously, make sure you have a healthy lifestyle. Being in good physical shape can clearly make a difference at the end of the day in a tournament, especially when you do a lot of events without a day off. You'll be cooler mentally and make better decisions. Impose yourself a sports program.
As far as food is concerned, the ideal is to eat a good breakfast to start the day, and then a meal around 2 p.m. You can use the services of "All American Dave", a food truck installed in the parking lot at the back of the Amazon Room which serves you directly at the table with good, balanced dishes. For dinner breaks, there are a few decent local restaurants within a short drive of the Rio. A word of advice: avoid the Rio Poker Kitchen.
Take a vacationThere is no shortage of activities in and around Las Vegas. Take advantage of your stay to explore the surroundings. I strongly advise you to go to Yosemite Park (ideally before July which will be the busiest period), see the Death Valley or go along the famous "California Road No. 1" and discover the California coast. This can be an opportunity to take a break in the middle of your program: this is what I did last year for a week before the Main Event.
For a summary of the best activities not to be missed, I strongly advise you to go (re) read the articles of our dear reporters who are never short of advice and good plans! Nightlife, shopping, sporting activities… there is something for everyone.
Treat yourselfRemember that thousands of other players would dream of being your seat, so take advantage of the chance you have to compete in the World Series of Poker. Play your best poker, be cordial with the amateurs that you may come across, don't hesitate to start a conversation at the table. You will probably meet very nice people. In short, have fun and who knows maybe you will have the chance to put your name in the annals of the WSOP.
